Still
from Don Quixote, a floating
stop animated ballet |
A
challenge of the aesthetic/conceptual restraints of classical ballet
has both personal and symbolic interests to me. My lifelong classical
ballet training has stirred up some questions in my mind. These
questions range from the relevance of the form itself to the physical
hardships endured by ballet dancers in an attempt to create pure
form, ethereal beauty and to give the impression of near weightlessness.
Ballet attempts to defy earthly laws and instead presents a world
of fantasy where youth perserveres. I come to these projects both
as a critic of the medium and as a devotee of this form which I
find endearing yet impossible and ever more lost in translation
to today's audiences.
